llms.txt is a simple text file that gives AI tools a short, clean summary of your website and links to the pages that matter most. This generator builds the file from a few fields, groups your links into sections, and lets you copy or download it, ready to upload.
What llms.txt is
Web pages are built for people and browsers: menus, ads, cookie banners, sidebars and scripts all sit around the actual content. When an AI assistant or AI search tool reads your site, all of that noise makes it harder to find the facts that matter.
llms.txt is a proposed standard that solves this in a simple way. You place a plain Markdown file at the root of your site, at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It starts with your site name and a short summary, then lists your most important pages with one line each about what they contain. An AI tool that reads it gets a clear map of your site in a few hundred words.
It works alongside robots.txt and your sitemap, not instead of them:
- robots.txt says what crawlers may visit.
- sitemap.xml lists every page for search engines.
- llms.txt explains what your site is and which pages are the best starting points.
Does llms.txt actually help?
Honest answer: it is still a young proposal, and AI companies have not all confirmed how they use it. Some AI tools, developer assistants and documentation platforms read it, and more sites publish one every month. It costs nothing, takes ten minutes, and cannot hurt your normal search rankings. For tool sites, documentation, personal brands and businesses that want AI assistants to describe them correctly, it is a sensible small step.
What it will not do is replace good content, clear pages and normal SEO. Think of it as a well written welcome note, not a ranking trick.
How to use the generator
-
Enter your site name. It becomes the main heading of the file.
-
Write a one or two sentence summary. Say what the site is and who it is for. This is the most important line in the file.
-
Add details if they help: who runs the site, where you are based, what topics you cover and what you do not cover.
-
List your important pages, one per line, as
Section | Title | URL | short note. Lines with the same section are grouped together. -
Copy or download the result and upload it to the root of your site.
Everything runs in your browser; nothing is sent or saved.
The file format
llms.txt uses Markdown, the same simple format used in many chat apps and documentation sites:
| Part | Format | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Site name | A heading starting with # | # Example Tools |
| Summary | A quote line starting with > | > Free domain tools and plain guides for beginners. |
| Details | Normal paragraphs | Run by one developer in Gilgit, Pakistan. |
| Sections | Headings starting with ## | ## Tools |
| Links | List items with a Markdown link and a note | – [DNS Checker](https://…): live DNS records |
A common convention is to add a section called Optional for pages that are useful but less important. AI tools with limited space can skip that section first.
What to include
- Your main pages: home, about and contact, so AI tools know who you are and how to reach you.
- Your best content: the guides, tools or products you most want people to find, not every post.
- Clear notes: each link gets a few words that say what is on the page. Write them for someone who has never seen your site.
- Facts AI often gets wrong: your real name, location, prices policy, or what your product does not do.
What to leave out
- Login, cart, checkout and account pages.
- Tag and category archives with no unique content.
- Hundreds of links. Keep it focused; 10 to 40 links is plenty for most sites.
- Marketing hype. Plain facts are more useful and more likely to be repeated accurately.

How to upload llms.txt
WordPress
Upload the downloaded file with your host’s file manager into the main WordPress folder, the one that contains wp-config.php. Then open yourdomain.com/llms.txt to confirm it loads. Some themes and plugins, including the theme on this site, can generate llms.txt automatically from your pages; if yours does, you do not need a separate file.
Other sites
Place the file in your site’s root folder, the same place as robots.txt. The name must be exactly llms.txt in lowercase.
Check it loads as text
Open the address in a browser. You should see plain text, not a 404 page or a download prompt. If your site redirects it to a version with a trailing slash, fix that redirect so tools can read the file at the exact address.
Keep it up to date
An llms.txt file that lists deleted pages or old prices does more harm than good. Review it whenever you add an important page or change something major. A reminder every three months is enough for most sites.
llms.txt and robots.txt together
If your robots.txt blocks an AI crawler, that crawler should not read your pages, including llms.txt. Decide your AI policy first with the Robots.txt Generator, then publish llms.txt if you want AI tools to understand your site. Many site owners allow AI answer bots and publish llms.txt so assistants describe them correctly, while choosing separately whether to allow training crawlers.
Writing a summary AI tools can use
The summary line is what an AI assistant is most likely to repeat when someone asks about your site, so treat it like the answer to “What is this website?”. Some tips:
- Say what, for whom and where. “Free domain and website tools for beginners, with guides for site owners in Pakistan” beats “The best tools on the internet”.
- Use the names people search. Your brand name, your personal name if it is a personal site, and the main product or service names.
- Avoid claims you cannot prove. “Number one” and “best” are ignored or repeated with doubt. Plain facts are trusted.
- Mention limits. If you do not ship outside Pakistan, or a tool does not support some extensions, say so. It prevents wrong answers about you.
Grouping links into sections
Sections help AI tools understand the shape of your site. Good section names describe the type of content: Tools, Guides, Products, Services, Documentation, About. Each section should hold pages that a visitor with that need would want. For a store, sections might be Categories, Best sellers, Shipping and returns, and About. For a personal brand, they might be About, Projects, Writing and Contact.
Put the most useful section first. If an AI tool only reads part of the file, it should still see what matters most.
Optional: llms-full.txt
Some sites also publish a second file, llms-full.txt, that contains the full text of key pages in Markdown, so AI tools can read everything in one request. This is mainly useful for documentation sites and software products. For most blogs, shops and personal sites, a single focused llms.txt is enough.
Checklist before you publish
-
The summary says what the site is in one or two plain sentences.
-
Every URL in the file opens and is the final address, not a redirect.
-
Each link has a short note that explains the page.
-
The file opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt as plain text.
-
Your robots.txt does not block the AI tools you want to reach.
-
A reminder is set to review it in three months.
Frequently asked questions
What is llms.txt?
A Markdown file at the root of your site that summarises what the site is about and links to its most important pages, written for AI tools.
Does llms.txt improve Google rankings?
No. It is meant for AI tools, not for classic search ranking. It does not hurt your rankings either.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your domain, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, next to robots.txt.
How many links should it have?
Usually 10 to 40 of your most important pages. Put less important pages in an Optional section.
Do all AI tools read llms.txt?
Not yet. It is a newer proposal. Some tools use it already and adoption is growing.
Is this generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no signup, and nothing is saved.
Can I edit the file later?
Yes. It is plain text. Edit it in any text editor or generate a new one here and upload it again.
Should every page of my site be in llms.txt?
No. List the pages that best explain your site and answer common questions. Your sitemap already covers every page for search engines.
