Most people in Pakistan type Urdu in English letters on their phones: “aap kaise hain”. This converter turns that Roman Urdu into proper Urdu script as you type. Common words come from a built-in word list for accurate spelling, and other words are spelled out letter by letter, so you can quickly correct them in the Urdu box.

Why Roman Urdu to Urdu is tricky

Roman Urdu has no fixed spelling. The same word can be written as bohat, bahut, boht or bohot. English letters also do not map one to one onto Urdu letters. The sound “s” can be س, ص or ث in Urdu. The sound “z” can be ز, ذ, ض or ظ. “h” can be ہ or ح. A computer cannot always know which one is correct without understanding the word.

That is why this converter works in two layers:

  1. Word list first. Hundreds of common words, including pronouns, verbs, question words, greetings, time words and place names like Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu, are converted using their correct Urdu spelling. “khoobsurat” becomes خوبصورت with the right ص, not a guess.

  2. Letter rules second. Words not in the list are spelled out using common sound rules: kh becomes خ, sh becomes ش, ch becomes چ, th becomes تھ, aa becomes ا, and so on.

Punctuation is converted too: question marks become ؟, commas become ، and full stops become ۔

How to use the converter

  1. Type or paste Roman Urdu in the left box.

  2. Read the Urdu that appears on the right.

  3. Correct any word that looks wrong directly in the Urdu box. The Urdu box is editable.

  4. Copy the Urdu and paste it into WhatsApp, a document, a post or your website.

Everything runs in your browser. Your text is not sent anywhere.

Examples

Roman Urdu Urdu
aap kaise hain? آپ کیسے ہیں؟
main theek hoon, shukriya. میں ٹھیک ہوں، شکریہ۔
gilgit bohat khoobsurat hai. گلگت بہت خوبصورت ہے۔
kal ghar aana کل گھر آنا
aaj mausam thanda hai آج موسم ٹھنڈا ہے

Tips for better results

  • Use common spellings. “nahi”, “bohat”, “kya”, “hai” and “aap” are all in the word list. Unusual spellings fall back to letter rules.
  • Write long vowels clearly. Type “aa” for آ or ا in the middle of a word, “ee” for ی and “oo” for و. “naam” works better than “nam”.
  • Keep words separate. “aapka” and “aap ka” both work for common words, but for new words, spaces help the rules.
  • Fix names by hand. Personal names have many spellings. Type them once in the Urdu box after converting.
  • Proofread before publishing. For short messages the result is often ready to send. For articles, books or official documents, always read it through once.

Who this tool is for

WhatsApp and social media

Write a status, a caption or a message in Urdu script without installing an Urdu keyboard.

Bloggers and writers

Draft quickly in Roman Urdu, convert, then polish. Then check length with the Word Counter, which also counts Urdu.

Students

Prepare Urdu notes or assignments when your laptop has no Urdu keyboard set up.

Businesses

Create Urdu versions of short notices, menu items or product names for local customers.

Installing an Urdu keyboard

For long Urdu writing, a real Urdu keyboard is more accurate than any converter. On Android, open Gboard settings, Languages, and add Urdu. On iPhone, go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards and add Urdu. On Windows, add Urdu in Settings, Time and Language, Language and region. Gboard on Android also has a transliteration mode that suggests Urdu words while you type in English letters, which works well together with this tool.

Showing Urdu nicely on a website

If you publish Urdu on your own site, set the text direction to right-to-left and use a good Urdu font. Noto Nastaliq Urdu is free and widely used. In HTML, add dir=”rtl” and lang=”ur” to Urdu paragraphs so browsers align and read them correctly.

How the letter rules work

When a word is not in the built-in list, the converter reads it from left to right and applies simple rules:

Roman letters Urdu letter Example
kh خ khat becomes خت
gh غ ghar is in the list as گھر, but ghazal starts with غ
sh ش shaam becomes شام
ch چ chai becomes چائے (from the list)
th, ph, bh, dh, jh تھ، پھ، بھ، دھ، جھ bhai becomes بھائی
aa at the start آ aam becomes آم
ee, oo ی، و meer becomes میر
e at the end ے words ending in e get bari ye
short a in the middle (left out) Urdu usually does not write short vowels

Urdu normally does not write short vowels (zabar, zer, pesh), so the converter leaves out short “a” and “i” sounds in the middle of words, the same way a person writing Urdu would.

Letters that need a human check

Some Urdu sounds have several letters, and only knowledge of the word tells you which one is right. When you see one of these sounds in a word that is not in the list, check the spelling:

  • s: س (most words), ص (sabr, sahi), ث (sawab)
  • z: ز (most words), ذ (zikr), ض (zaroor), ظ (zulm)
  • t: ت (most words), ط (talib), ٹ (the hard t in theek)
  • h: ہ (most words), ح (hal, hukoomat)
  • d and r: د or ڈ, ر or ڑ, depending on whether the sound is soft or hard
  • Words with ain (ع), like ilm, aurat and aam, often start with ع instead of ا

The most common of these words are already in the list. For the rest, a quick look fixes them in seconds.

Roman Urdu spelling habits

People spell Roman Urdu in many ways, and the converter accepts the most common forms: hai or hay, nahi or nahin, bohat or bahut or boht, kaise or kaisay, mein or main or me. If a word comes out oddly, try the more common spelling. Writing long vowels clearly, like “naam” instead of “nam”, also gives better results with the letter rules.

Using the converter for longer writing

  1. Write a paragraph at a time in Roman Urdu.

  2. Read the Urdu output and correct names and unusual words.

  3. Copy the finished paragraph into your document.

  4. Repeat for the next paragraph.

Working paragraph by paragraph keeps corrections manageable and means you never lose more than a few lines of work.

Privacy for personal messages

Because conversion happens entirely in your browser, you can safely convert personal messages, family notes or private drafts. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored on our server.

Roman Urdu, Urdu and SEO

If you run a website for Pakistani readers, you may wonder whether to publish in Roman Urdu, Urdu script or English. People search in all three. Roman Urdu searches are very common on phones, while Urdu script content can rank with less competition for some topics. A practical approach is to publish the main article in the language your audience reads most comfortably, and use the other forms in headings or FAQs where they fit naturally. Whatever you choose, keep the URL slug short and in English letters, which the Slug Generator can create.

Shina, Burushaski and other regional languages

This converter is built for Urdu words. Regional languages of Gilgit-Baltistan, like Shina and Burushaski, have sounds and letters that standard Urdu does not use, and their spelling in Urdu script follows its own conventions. You can still use the letter rules as a starting point for these languages, but expect to correct more words by hand.

Common mistakes to look out for

  • Short words with two meanings. “kal” means both yesterday and tomorrow, and both are written کل, so that one is always right. But “is” in Roman Urdu (اس) can clash with the English word “is” in mixed text. Check sentences that mix the two languages.
  • English words inside Urdu. Words like mobile, internet and online are in the list with their usual Urdu spellings. Rare English words are spelled out by sound, which may not match how people normally write them in Urdu.
  • Joined words. In Urdu, ka, ki and ke are separate words. Type them with spaces for the cleanest result.
