A slug is the readable part of a web address that comes after your domain, like buy-domain-pakistan in example.com/buy-domain-pakistan/. This generator turns any title into a short, clean, lowercase slug, removes filler words and symbols, and lets you pick the separator and a length limit.

What makes a good slug

  • Short. Three to six words is ideal. Long slugs get cut off in search results and are hard to share.
  • Descriptive. Someone should guess what the page is about from the URL alone.
  • Lowercase. Some servers treat capital letters as different addresses, which can create duplicate pages.
  • Hyphens between words. Google treats hyphens as spaces. Underscores join words together, so hyphens are the standard.
  • No dates or numbers that will age, unless the page is truly about a specific year or list size.
  • No special characters like ?, &, % or emojis, which turn into messy codes in links.

How to use the generator

  1. Paste your page title or type a few words.

  2. Keep “Remove filler words” ticked to drop words like a, the, of, to and for.

  3. Tick “Remove numbers” if you do not want years or list counts in the URL.

  4. Pick a separator. Hyphen is recommended.

  5. Choose a maximum length. 75 characters is a sensible default.

  6. Copy the slug and paste it into the permalink field of your post or page.

Examples

Title Generated slug

SSL Certificate Checker: Is My Site Secure? ssl-certificate-checker-site-secure

The generator gives you a clean starting point. Often the best slug is even shorter than the automatic one: for the first example, buy-domain-pakistan says everything a reader needs. Edit freely.

Should the slug match the title exactly?

No. Titles are written to attract clicks and can change over time. Slugs should be short and stable. A title like “How to Buy a Domain Name in Pakistan: Complete 2026 Guide” can live happily at /buy-domain-pakistan/. If you later update the article for a new year, the title changes but the URL stays the same, and you keep all links pointing to it.

Changing a slug on a published page

Changing the URL of a page that is already indexed or shared has a cost: old links break unless you redirect them. If you must change it:

  1. Change the slug in WordPress.

  2. Add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. WordPress sometimes does this automatically for posts; SEO plugins like Rank Math and Yoast Premium can add it for you, or use a redirect plugin.

  3. Update internal links that point to the old address.

  4. Test the old URL with the Website Status Checker to confirm it redirects with a 301.

For pages that get little traffic, a better slug can be worth the change. For your most visited pages, leave a decent slug alone.

Before thinking about individual slugs, make sure your site uses clean permalinks. In WordPress go to Settings, Permalinks and choose Post name. This gives addresses like example.com/buy-domain-pakistan/ instead of example.com/?p=123. Set it once, ideally before you publish many posts, because changing the structure later changes every URL.

Slugs for Urdu content

WordPress allows Urdu letters in slugs, but they turn into long encoded strings when copied, like %D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%88. That looks broken in WhatsApp, emails and many apps. For Urdu articles, a short English or Roman Urdu slug usually works better: an Urdu article about Hunza travel can use /hunza-safar/ or /hunza-travel-guide/. The generator does not translate Urdu script, so type the slug in English letters.

Slug examples by type of page

Page Weak slug Better slug
Blog post /2026/10/29/my-new-post-about-hosting-123/ /cheap-hosting-pakistan/
Product /product/item-4421/ /product/hunza-dried-apricots/
Category /category/uncategorized/ /category/guides/
Tool page /tools/tool-page-1/ /tools/ssl-checker/
Local service /services/our-services-page/ /car-rental-gilgit/

The better versions are shorter, describe the page, and contain the words people search for, with no dates, numbers or filler.

Keywords in the slug

Including your main keyword in the slug is helpful, as long as it reads naturally. A slug like /domain-availability-checker/ tells people and search engines exactly what the page is. Avoid stuffing: /domain-checker-free-domain-checker-online/ looks spammy and earns no extra benefit. One clear phrase is enough.

Slugs and categories in URLs

Some sites put the category in every post URL, like /guides/buy-domain-pakistan/. That can help readers understand where a page sits, but it makes URLs longer, and if you move a post to another category the URL changes. For most blogs, the simple Post name structure without categories is easier to manage. Online stores and large sites with clear sections sometimes benefit from category paths. Decide once and keep it.

Trailing slashes and consistency

WordPress usually ends URLs with a slash, like /buy-domain-pakistan/. Some other platforms do not. Either is fine, but your site should use one style and redirect the other, so search engines do not see two versions. Check how your site behaves with the Redirect Checker.

Slugs for images and files

The same rules help with file names. Before uploading, rename IMG_20261029_1234.jpg to hunza-autumn-view.jpg. Search engines read file names as a small hint about the image, and clean names look better when people download or share your files. Use lowercase and hyphens, the same as page slugs.

A slug checklist before you publish

  1. It is lowercase, with hyphens between words.

  2. It is three to six words and easy to read aloud.

  3. It contains the main topic, once.

  4. It has no date or number that will go out of date.

  5. It does not repeat words already in the domain or category.

  6. It will still make sense if you update the article next year.

Common slug mistakes

Leaving the default slug

WordPress builds the slug from your first draft title. If you later rewrite the title, the old slug stays, sometimes with words that no longer fit. Check the slug before you press Publish.

Duplicate slugs ending in -2

If a slug already exists, WordPress adds -2 to the new one. This often happens when an old draft or a trashed page still holds the slug. Empty the trash or rename the old item, then set the clean slug.

A small improvement in wording is rarely worth losing links and rankings. Change slugs on established pages only with a redirect, and only when there is a real reason.

Spaces and symbols copied from titles

Some editors keep apostrophes, commas or special quotes in URLs, which become encoded characters. The generator strips them for you.

How slugs appear in search results

Google shows a breadcrumb line above each result, built from your domain and URL path, such as example.com › tools › ssl-checker. A short, readable slug looks clean there and reassures people that the page matches their search. Long slugs full of numbers or codes are cut off or look untrustworthy. You can preview the breadcrumb together with your title and description in the Meta Tag Generator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The readable part of a web address after the domain, which identifies a specific page.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats them as word separators, while underscores join words together.

How long should a slug be?

Three to six words is ideal. Keep it under about 60 to 75 characters.

Should I remove stop words?

Usually yes, as long as the slug still reads clearly. Keep a small word if removing it changes the meaning.

Can I include the year?

Only if the page is permanently about that year. For guides you update every year, leave the year out so the URL never goes stale.

Does the slug affect SEO?

Slightly. A clear slug helps people and search engines understand the page and looks better in search results. It is not a major ranking factor.

Does the slug have to include the keyword?

No, but a short phrase that describes the page usually includes it naturally, which helps readers and search engines.

What is the difference between a slug and a permalink?

The permalink is the full permanent URL of a page. The slug is the last part of it that you choose for each post or page.

Can two pages have the same slug?

Not at the same level. WordPress adds a number to keep each URL unique. Pages under different parent pages can share a slug.

Should slugs be in English for an Urdu site?

Usually yes. Short English or Roman Urdu slugs stay readable when shared, while Urdu letters turn into long encoded strings in many apps.

Is the slug generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no signup.

Can I use capital letters in a slug?

It is better not to. Lowercase avoids duplicate URLs on servers that treat upper and lower case as different addresses.

Will changing my permalink structure break links?

Yes, every URL changes. If you must change it on an existing site, add redirects from the old structure to the new one.
