Type or paste any text and the Word Counter updates instantly: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading time, speaking time, average word length and your most used words. It works for English, Roman Urdu and Urdu script, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
What the counter measures
| Measure | How it is counted |
|---|---|
| Words | Groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces or line breaks. Punctuation alone does not count as a word. |
| Characters | Every letter, number, space and symbol, exactly as typed. |
| Without spaces | All characters except spaces, tabs and line breaks. |
| Sentences | Text ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, including the Urdu full stop and question mark. |
| Paragraphs | Blocks of text separated by an empty line. |
| Reading time | Words divided by 220, an average silent reading speed for online text. |
| Speaking time | Words divided by 130, a comfortable speaking pace for videos, speeches and podcasts. |
| Average word length | Total letters in words divided by the number of words. |
| Most used words | Your most frequent words, ignoring common English filler words. |
How to use it
-
Type or paste your text into the box. You can paste from Word, Google Docs, WhatsApp or any website.
-
Watch the numbers update as you type or edit.
-
Check the most used words to spot repetition.
The text stays in your browser. If you close the page, it is gone, so keep your own copy of anything important.
Common word and character limits
Many places where you write have limits. Here are the ones people check most often:
| Where | Limit or good length |
|---|---|
| Google title | About 60 characters before it gets cut |
| Meta description | About 155 to 160 characters |
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters on a free account |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters; the first 125 or so show before “more” |
| Instagram and TikTok bio | 150 and 80 characters |
| Facebook post | Very long allowed, but around 40 to 80 characters gets the most attention |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters; about 200 show before “see more” |
| YouTube title | 100 characters; about 60 show on most screens |
| YouTube description | 5,000 characters |
| WhatsApp status text | About 700 characters |
Platforms change their limits from time to time, so treat these as a guide and check the app if you are close to the edge.
How long should a blog post be?
There is no single right length. The best length is the one that fully answers the question, without filler. Some rough guidance:
- Quick answers and news: 300 to 700 words.
- How-to guides: 1,000 to 2,000 words, depending on the number of steps.
- In-depth guides and reviews: 2,000 words or more when the topic needs it.
- Product pages: 150 to 500 words of real, specific detail.
Look at the pages that already rank for your topic. If they all cover ten subtopics and yours covers three, you probably need more depth. If they are short and to the point, a long article full of padding will not help.
Word count for students and writers
Essays, assignments and applications often have strict word limits. A few tips:
- Teachers and forms usually count words, not characters. Check whether headings and references are included.
- Numbers like 2026 count as one word. Hyphenated words like Gilgit-Baltistan count as one word.
- If you are over the limit, cut filler phrases first: “in order to” becomes “to”, “due to the fact that” becomes “because”.
- If you are under the limit, add a specific example or a short explanation, not repetition.
Counting Urdu and Roman Urdu
The counter splits words on spaces, which works for Urdu script and Roman Urdu. Urdu text sometimes joins words without a space, or splits one word into two parts with a space, depending on the keyboard and font. Because of that, Urdu word counts can differ slightly between tools. Character counts for Urdu include the letters and any diacritics you typed.
If you want to convert Roman Urdu to Urdu script first, use the Roman Urdu to Urdu Converter, then paste the result here.
Reading time on your blog
Many blogs show “5 min read” at the top of each post. It sets expectations and can make readers more likely to start. The counter uses 220 words per minute, a common average for reading online. For a more detailed estimate with images and different reading speeds, use the Reading Time Calculator.
Using the most used words list
The list shows which words you lean on. If the same adjective appears ten times in a short article, swap some for more precise words. If your main topic is not in the list at all, your text may not be clear about what it covers. For a deeper look at phrases and focus keywords, use the Keyword Density Checker.
Writing tighter text
Word counts help you see when text is too long, but the real goal is to say more with fewer words. Some easy edits:
| Wordy | Tighter |
|---|---|
| In order to | To |
| Due to the fact that | Because |
| At this point in time | Now |
| Has the ability to | Can |
| In the event that | If |
| A large number of | Many |
| It is important to note that | (delete it and say the point) |
Short sentences are easier to read on a phone. If a sentence runs past about 25 words, look for a place to split it. If a paragraph is longer than four or five lines on a phone screen, split that too.
Characters vs words: which limit applies?
Social networks, SMS and search engines usually limit characters. Schools, publishers and job applications usually limit words. When a form says “500 characters”, spaces normally count, so use the Characters number. When it says “500 words”, use the Words number. If you are unsure, aim a little under the limit to be safe.
SMS and WhatsApp message length
A standard SMS holds 160 characters of English text. Messages with Urdu or emojis use a different encoding and fit only about 70 characters per SMS, so a long Urdu SMS is split into several parts and may cost more. WhatsApp has no practical limit for chat messages, but short messages are read more often, especially in groups.
Word count and SEO
Google does not rank pages by word count. Longer pages often rank well because they cover a topic more completely, not because of the number itself. Use word count as a planning tool: compare your draft with the pages that already rank, check whether you have covered the questions they answer, then add what is missing. Never pad text just to reach a number. Readers notice, and they leave.
Counting words in a document file
To count words in a Word document, PDF or Google Doc, open the file, select all the text, copy it and paste it here. For PDFs, some copied text loses spaces between lines, which can merge words. If the count looks low, check a few lines in the box and fix any joined words.
Readability: beyond the numbers
Two texts with the same word count can feel very different to read. A few signals in the results help you judge readability:
- Average word length around 4 to 5 letters is normal for clear English. Much higher often means jargon or long technical words.
- Words per sentence (words divided by sentences) around 15 to 20 is comfortable. Above 25, readers start to lose the thread.
- Paragraph count should grow with length. A 900 word text in two paragraphs is a wall of text on a phone.
Write the way you would explain something to a friend, then trim. Clear writing helps every reader, including those reading in a second language.
Frequently asked questions

Yes. It is free with no signup and no limit on text length for normal use.
Is my text saved anywhere?

Does it count Urdu words?
